Check out the Wall Street Journal today on page A17. GM has a full page advertisement stating their case for why they should receive federal money.
They say,
“To continue our progress we will utilize federal money to:
- Successfully launch key cars and crossovers in important segments through 2010.
- Maintain our leadership in developing advanced propulsion technologies.
- Completely reinvent the automotive industry through the introduction of the the new Chevy Volt extended-range electric vehicle.
- Maintain full engineering, technology, capital and operational requirements.”
Do you believe them?

US Manufacturing has been under siege for more than 15 years. Many experts have predicted the demise of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler for many years. We are all aware of the “legacy costs” that burden GM. It has been well documented that the United Auto Workers have been less than flexible in changing their “work rules”. Management has been no better.
So what do we do?
Give every auto worker a check for a reasonable amount that is based on their years of service and close down the plants. Should the government structure a deal so that we are left with only one automobile company. Or should we infuse a massive amount of capital into all three companies and try and save them?
Manufacturing is the backbone of this country. Let’s bail out the Big Three with a structured deal that insures their success.
